another post about growing up...

going through old photos is like going through a time machine. suddenly waves of emotions flood my mind, and i can remember the smell of her house, what we ate, the music we listened to. i remember mostly christmas lights, and arcade fire, fleet foxes, bicycles in the spring setting sun. there were bedroom floors and each others' clothes on our backs. i remember how we were our only ones.
there weren't boys, there weren't girls, there was you and me.

but now, of course, it's different. now there's romance, there's boys, there's instagram and people we want to please; approval of strangers. we ride in cars and buses, and barely touch our bikes. our hair is shorter, we wear makeup, and use the internet way too damn much.
we barely speak. i mostly see you through the cracked screen of my cell phone. i've forgotten your laugh, your hands, and the way you write letters perfectly with a smooth inked pen.

i was told this is an inevitable part of growing up,
but i'm wondering if maybe we just took a wrong turn somewhere.

but the sun is still in your eyes, and there's god in your heart. you've deservingly found love. and, hell, you know what you want from it. things i've wanted to become i've just recently found in you.

"

Forever trusting who we are,
and nothing else matters.

I'm afraid to go to Romania.
I'm afraid of falling in love with children and leaving them.
I'm afraid of seeing the hurt, the pain.
I can deal with my own, just not that of others.
I'm afraid that my empathy will consume me and bring me down.

I just hope that I can be fully invested in the service of sweet souls, that I will forget myself. Or at least put myself on hold for a while. Those children need me.

Sometimes when I'm lying in bed, I think about their baby hands and I'm not afraid anymore. I picture these children that I know not yet, but already love completely. Their hands need something to hold. They need me and all the love I have and am willing to give.

The only thing that matters right now is making sure I'm going forward. I need to put the past away, put people in the past away, put my mistakes in the past away. Nothing else matters.

a life that we can live

Together, through the loneliest days of our lives.

I watched this short film today for the first time in three years. The first time I did, it was with my best friend at the time. We cried as we watched it, but I don't remember why. I couldn't relate to the sad parts of the film, only the good ones: the scenes of kids riding their bikes around town, being with people you love, two "other halves" coming together in a friendship.

As I watch it now, years older, I cry for different reasons. I can relate to the theme of the film and The Suburbs in its entirety: growing apart from your friends as you grow into adulthood. That friend is no longer in my life. Watching it, I only drew parallels from Kyle and Winter's friendship to ours. I won't go into detail because it's somehow hard for me. Simply, the evolution of our friendship was just like most. It began strong, plateaued strong, we grew apart because of personal choices, then anger which turned into hatred solidified the end of the friendship, and now we do not speak or see each other.

Toward the end of the film, Winter bursts into Kyle's work place and beats him up. Fuming with anger, he throws tables and chairs, curses and wails. The reason of his temper is unclear to me. Is he upset that Kyle is still full of life? Is the thought of their growing apart tearing him apart? His hate consumed him.
While getting his ass kicked, Kyle takes all the blows and curses from Winter. He doesn't fight back. He does nothing. He lies on the ground, bleeding and bruised, wondering what the hell just happened and why the hell it happened.

I don't know why things happened the way they did in my life. I don't know why we never seemed to work things out. I don't know why you hate me so much.

But I do know that I have learned from what has happened to me so far. I do know that I can work things out, even though it will never be the same. And I do know that I do not hate you, and I never will.

"Wasted hours before we knew where to go and what to do. Wasted hours that you make new and turn into a life that we can live."

old (never before posted) pictures of sabrina

this pains me to write:

you're just my mother.
you're not my friend.
you're not interested in me.
you care about my well-being,
but somehow, it's not enough.

the only questions you ever ask are,
"what time do you work?"
"did you pick up your pills?"
"is your paper finished?"
all of which you know the answers to.

the meaningful, deep questions
-the ones that make me feel loved-
i have never heard from you.

it's almost as if you didn't even birth me.
i'm questioning if we ever connected at all.

i'm sitting across the table from you as you type,
you don't bother to raise your eyes a few inches from your screen
to see my eyes filled with tears.
